Internal Lightning (LV Surge Arrester) Systems General Technical Specifications

A- GENERAL
A grounding system that complies with the rules should be used for the building and/or installations. Consequently, the
“main grounding conductor” and the “protection conductor” and all other “external conductive parts” (steel frame
structure, central heating and air conditioning systems, piping of water and natural gas systems, main metal bars of
structural reinforced concrete, function grounding system intended for devices, communication -external lightning
rod- overvoltage protection systems, and grounding systems for rail systems and antenna installations) located in the
foundation of and around the building/installations should be connected to the main equipotential (bonding) system.
(TS HD 384.4.41 S2 page 7 / TS IEC 61024-1-1 and 2 page 10/ Regulation on Grounding for Electrical Installations page:37 )
For smooth operation of overvoltage protection devices, the grounding eqipotentialization system installed under
the applicable regulations (DIN 57 800 Part 1/VDE 0800 Part 1/IEC 62305) should be available and the protected and
unprotected lines should be laid separately.
a. Protection systems shall be arranged to protect three-phase and one-neutral grounding line.
b. Protection systems shall be applied as based on three stages; as class B, C and D.
c. Applicable systems shall have resistance against Lightning + Network peaks.
d. 1-stage (class B) protection products shall be connected with a NH fuse switch disconnector on MDP (main distribution
panel) busbars located after the TRANSFORMER. 2-stage (class C) protection products shall be installed onto the main
switch outlet in secondary or sub-distribution panels, and 3-stage (class D) protection products shall be used over device
supply sockets (as oversocket protection) or after the sets of receiver fuses.
e. If LV panel has no available space for class B products, products shall be installed in a separate PVC or metal panel and
the connection between these panels and the distribution units of the station shall be provided with cables of appropriate
cross-section and length.
f. Class B products shall contain no discharge elements such as varistors etc. and shall be designed with “Spark-
Gap”technology, featuring “maintenance-free” property and multicarbon/teflon technology, such that they release no
gas, arc or flame during discharge under any circumstances.
g. Each of the inlets-outlets of class B products shall include separate 2 connection terminals, and the upper surface of
connection terminals shall be insulated with PVC plugs to ensure protection against touching. In addition, the inlets of
products shall indicate the points to which Phase-Neutral and Ground lines are to be connected.
h. Protection products shall not allow the transfer of a voltage value higher than their protection values to any circuits
coming after them before and after discharge.
i. Protection products shall provide protection against Instantaneous voltage impulses, not against continuous overvoltages.
j. The outlets of protection products shall securely be connected to the grounding equipotentialization busbar through
the possible shortest path with yellow-green grounding cable of the cross-section given in user’s manuals for products.
k. The grounding cable to be connected shall be held as remote as possible from protected supply or signal cables
crossing through protection products.
l. Protection products shall be connected in parallel to the supply circuit in Three-Phase+Neutral/Monophase+Neutral
configuration.
m. The sockets of protection products shall have applicable continuous maximum operating voltages of 230/400 VAC,
and class C products shall feature sockets showing that sockets are operating smoothly, which have the capability to
change with a status indicator that turns from green to red. Class D products (those of group socket type) should feature
a LED light turning from green to red in case of failure. Panel type class D products shall have green LEDs which flash in
good condition and blink in case of failure.
n. Protection products shall be based on IEC 61643-1 and shall comply with E DIN VDE 0675.
o. Protection products shall have protection rating of IP 20 in accordance with IEC 60 529/EN 60 529.
p. Protection products shall be capable of being installed onto DIN EN 50 022 rail.
q. (Triple or quinary) Class D protection products which are available in the form of group sockets shall be provided for
and installed on those devices/systems in the control and monitoring center.
r. The installation of protection products shall be performed in accordance with the catalog/brochure/installation
instructions of the manufacturer. The supply, installation and connection of all protection products shall be performed by
the “contractor”.
